Work in flight
Plan useful work around business class Wi-Fi to Japan
A long flight can provide time to review a proposal, edit a presentation, or prepare for meetings in Japan. Build that work around files you can open without a connection. Inflight Wi-Fi can support the plan when available, but a business class ticket should not become a promise to colleagues that you will be continuously reachable.

Key points
Check ANA and JAL business class Wi-Fi policies, then prepare offline tasks, files, and communication plans for a productive flight from the US to Japan.
Check the airline's current service
ANA currently lists complimentary internet access for first and business class on its international A380, Boeing 787, and Boeing 777 services. Its aircraft-specific guidance matters: the airline also identifies aircraft without Wi-Fi. For eligible service, review the voucher-code instructions and make sure your email is correctly registered. Cabin crew can help if a code has not arrived.
JAL currently provides complimentary internet access for international first and business class passengers. Check the onboard connection instructions and the Wi-Fi indication in the airline's flight search. Its service page warns that satellite connectivity can become unavailable or unstable, and large downloads can be difficult. These policies establish eligibility, not a guaranteed connection speed.
Give each task an offline version
Choose one main deliverable and one lighter task before packing. Open the actual files on the device you will carry, disconnect from the internet, and check that edits can be saved. A cloud folder marked for offline use is only useful if the required attachments, fonts, reference documents, and permissions also work.
| Task | Prepare before departure | If connectivity returns |
|---|---|---|
| Edit a presentation | Save the deck and supporting figures locally | Upload a clearly named draft |
| Review a contract | Download the approved working copy | Send comments through the agreed channel |
| Answer routine email | Save context and draft replies offline | Check recipients before sending |
| Prepare for a meeting | Save the agenda and background reading | Fetch only essential updates |
| Join a live discussion | Move it outside the flight | Send a written update instead |
Set expectations before boarding
Tell your team when you will next check messages on the ground, using an explicit time zone. Assign a colleague any approval that cannot wait until arrival. If a draft is due during the flight, agree whether an offline draft delivered after landing meets the need; otherwise complete the handoff before departure.
JAL states that VoIP services such as Skype cannot be used inflight. Plan calls and live collaboration for ground time. Even a task that technically supports reconnection can become frustrating when several people are editing the same file, so establish who owns the working version.
Prepare devices and protect the work
Charge your devices before boarding and keep the required cable or adapter in your personal item. Ask your employer which documents may be downloaded and how its approved remote-access tools should be used. Test sign-in while you still have normal connectivity, particularly if it depends on a separate device.
Create an obvious local filename for the inflight draft and keep the original intact. Before reconnecting, review pending uploads and message drafts. Position sensitive material with neighboring passengers in mind, and avoid turning a tray table into the only copy of important work.
Choose the schedule for the whole arrival day
Compare the flight with the first fixed appointment in Japan. Allow time after landing for airport formalities, onward travel, and a reliable ground connection before scheduling a presentation. A shorter list of completed tasks may serve the trip better than trying to work through every available hour.
Use the nonstop Tokyo guide to organize departure preferences. Business Flight JP's selector is a schedule-preference catalog with company estimates; a consultant confirms the final flight and fare. It is not evidence that Wi-Fi will function on a particular departure.

Frequently asked questions
Is business class Wi-Fi currently free on ANA and JAL?
Both publish complimentary business class access on eligible international services. Check the current aircraft and connection instructions for your flight.
Can I promise to attend a video meeting?
Schedule it outside the flight. Connection availability is uncertain, and JAL expressly restricts inflight VoIP use.
What should I download?
The working file, its attachments, necessary reference material, and an agenda. Test that everything opens while your device is offline.
