Baggage and ticket details
ANA vs JAL Business-Class Baggage to Japan
Compare baggage by piece count, weight per bag and outside dimensions. A business-class label alone does not answer all three. The airline's published allowance is a starting point; the allowance attached to your actual itinerary is what you need confirmed before packing for a US–Japan trip.

Key points
Compare official ANA and JAL business-class baggage limits for Japan trips, then check your ticket, codeshares and connections before you pack your bags.
Compare the published checked-bag limits
ANA's current guidance makes the included piece count dependent on fare rules. JAL publishes a three-piece business-class allowance. The figures below describe the cited international policies, before any separately verified status benefit or itinerary exception.
| Check | ANA | JAL |
|---|---|---|
| Included pieces | 1–2, depending on fare rules | 3 |
| Weight per piece | Up to 32 kg / 70 lb | Up to 32 kg / 70 lb |
| Length + width + height | Up to 158 cm / 62 in | Up to 203 cm / 80 in |
| What to measure | Include wheels and handles | Include wheels and handles |
Find the allowance on your actual ticket
ANA explicitly says the free allowance written on the ticket applies. Before payment, request the expected bag count and per-bag limits in writing; after issue, compare them with your ticket receipt. Resolve a mismatch with the ticket issuer instead of relying on a general comparison chart.
Repeat the check after a change or upgrade. Ask whether the revised ticket changes your baggage entitlement and whether any membership benefit has been recognized. Keep cabin allowance and status allowance separate in your notes so you do not accidentally count the same benefit twice.
Check codeshares and connections as a whole
A flight number and the airline operating the aircraft are not always the same. ANA warns that another airline's baggage rules may apply on mixed itineraries. JAL says the allowance shown on the ticket generally applies to partner-operated codeshares and recommends confirming details with the airline or travel agency.
List every segment, including a US positioning flight or a connection within Japan. If you hold separate tickets, ask about the allowance on each and whether bags can be checked through. Also confirm where you must collect and recheck them. Do not build a tight connection around an unverified baggage assumption.
Pack for the whole journey through Japan
Measure the suitcase you will actually use and weigh each packed bag separately. A generous total allowance does not make one oversized or overweight item compliant. Ask the airline about unusual equipment rather than treating a musical instrument or sports case as an ordinary suitcase.
Consider how you will move every bag between the airport, hotel and later destinations. A third suitcase may fit the flight allowance while making transfers cumbersome. Leave space for purchases, agree who will manage each bag, and check carry-on rules separately before deciding what travels with you in the cabin.
Include baggage needs in your quote request
Tell the consultant how many people are traveling, how many checked bags each expects, and whether any bag is unusually large or heavy. Mention separate flights and the return journey. That gives the comparison a practical basis before a fare is chosen.
If a cheaper ticket needs extra baggage, request the applicable charge before deciding whether it is still the better option. Save the airline confirmation with your ticket documents and check the current policy again before departure. Business Flight JP's displayed estimates do not confirm a particular ticket's baggage entitlement.

Frequently asked questions
Does ANA business class always include two checked bags?
Do not assume that. Its current published guidance makes the count fare-dependent. Read the allowance on your ticket and have the issuer clarify it before you travel.
Does JAL business class include three checked bags?
JAL's published international business-class allowance is three bags within its per-piece limits. Confirm the applicable allowance for your actual itinerary, especially when another airline operates a segment.
Can two travelers combine their bag weight allowances?
Plan around each passenger's allowance and each bag's limit. If you want to distribute baggage differently, obtain the airline's confirmation rather than assuming unused weight can be pooled.
Are children's and infants' allowances identical?
Do not assume so. Give the airline each child's age and whether they occupy a seat, and ask separately about checked bags, strollers and child seats for the itinerary.
